Olive Leaf Extract - The Facts
72The ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Mediterranean cultures, used a variety of natural plants to cure a variety of health related conditions. One of the most popular plants is the Olive tree. Olea europaea or the Olive tree is a species that grow in some areas of the Mediterranean, central Asia, parts of south America and southern Australia. Depending on the climate grown, this tree usually grows between 8 to 15 meters tall. Once the tree matures and the leafs are harvested, the leaf extract can be used for a number of health related problems.
Although the olive leaf's healing properties have been know for thousands of years, it wasn't until the early 20th century that it's antibacterial/antiviral compounds were isolated. During the research surrounding the discovery of Oleuropein (the olive leaf's powerful antibacterial/antiviral compound), it was discovered that the antiviral properties worked by infiltrating the virus and shutting down its reproduction capabilities, thus preventing the viruses from reproducing. I am sure the researchers weren't surprised; this tree was attracting the attention of the modern medical research community as early as the mid 1800's. In the 1854 Pharmaceutical Journal of Provincial Transactions Olive leaf was mentioned for being effective against fever that other wise would have been fatal on the island of Mytelene in the 1840's. In addition, in the 1880's Olive Leaf Extract was successfully use to fight malaria. As recent as the 1970's researchers found that even in high doses Olive leaf Extract is safe to use.

Such great information Coolmon2009!
Ancient cultures knew to use every part of a plant for its many health benefits. And because they are ancient they have been tested for thousands of years - unlike the toxic drugs that keep showing up on the market - to suppress symptoms but not cure or prevent the ailment.
Thanks so much for putting together such a informative and useful hub!
